For the last few weeks we have been really focused on our "Improve the World" goal. Students have been learning a lot about what extreme poverty means and how it compares with the poverty we have here in the U.S. Some facts they have been learning about and teaching to others include (Facts from here):

Members have been making posters to help educate the rest of the students at Cherry Creek about world poverty. They want to make sure everyone at Cherry Creek understands why this cause is so important to them. We also hope this generates some curiosity with the rest of the students in the school! In mid-March, we will be meeting with our 2nd and 3rd grade classes and teaching them about world poverty and how micro-financing (Kiva.org is an example of this) is part of the solution. We are planning to include 4th and 5th grade classes in this too! Once the education portion of our campaign is done, we will hold a World Poverty Week and encourage students to help be a part of the solution to end world poverty. Money raised will go into our Kiva account to help people in need around the world! Stay tuned for more details!! |
Speaking of Kiva, we recently loaned to our 80th country!! A woman in Afghanistan has started a company selling traditional embroidery. She has already done one successful loan and employs several people. Profits from this go to educating girls there. Please check out the details of the loan here.
P.S. We have only ONE more country left before we have loaned to every country available on Kiva!
