Cherry Creek Students chose to DO SOMETHING. After learning about the water crisis (see facts in previous post) students rolled up their sleeves and got to work! They spoke to adults about the water crisis and earned money to purchase water filters for families in Haiti. Each bio-sand water filter costs $100. In just one week, Cherry Creek students raised enough money to fund TWENTY-TWO water filters!! That's $2,200!! Several classrooms set and then met goals for their fundraising. These classrooms will send a label to go on a filter to honor their efforts.
Even more impressive than the amount of money the kids raised are the stories behind the money. Some families donated Christmas money they received. One boy gave his Christmas money, and his parents matched it! Other students made things to sell, did chores, and dug into couch cushions and change jars!
Learning more about clean water and bio-sand water filters didn't come only from Early Act presentations. Mrs. Lum's second grade class learned how bio-sand water filters work and even made some of their own. Check out the slideshow at the right to see pictures of these second grade scientists in action!!!
This project was a school-wide effort, and everyone's effort will be paying off big for many families in Haiti. :)
I am _________ because you were ___________.
At one of our recent meetings, Early Act students were encouraged to think of someone who has had a part in making them who they are today. They then filled in the blanks to the phrase, "I am because you were ." Check out the pictures below (and the video that inspired the project at the right).
