We started our meeting with a Pep Talk for the World by Kid President. PLEASE watch the video at the right. It's got a great message and just makes you want to save the world!! And it's true! The planet is a better place because YOU are on it! We also revisited the Four-Way Test from Rotary. Fifth graders remembered hearing about the test last year when the Lowell Rotary President, Deb Wilks came to visit us (See the blog from that meeting here: | |
Early Act Special Guest.). Mr. Audia reviewed the meaning of each part of the test. Rotarians use this test in all parts of their lives--in and out of Rotary. Thinking of these four things before we think, do, or say something can really help slow us down a bit and be more helpful. During the conversation, students also shared how they feel when they help someone. Some of the great words we heard were: happy, nice, magical, proud, and special. This led us into a conversation about some of the projects we will be working on soon--a memorial for Mrs. Wade and Purple Pinkie Week for the global End Polio Now campaign. Plans for the Ms. Wade memorial are still in the works, so stay tuned, but know that it will benefit the school community in several ways. |
World Polio Day is Saturday, October 24. In the past we have used a lunch time or two to have Early Act students educate the rest of the student body (and adults too!) about the effects of polio and why it matters so much. Students who donate to the cause and/or can tell us a fact about polio get to have their pinkie painted purple. The meaning of this is deeper than just a purple pinkie. Children who get vaccinated really like the taste of the vaccine and will actually get back in line to get the vaccination again. People giving the vaccine paint the children's pinkies purple to prevent them from getting vaccinated twice. The purple pinkies are also a way to raise awareness of the disease. Students and adults who have purple pinkies are bound to get questions from other people in their lives. This is a perfect opportunity to include someone new in the conversation to eradicate polio from the world. Our Purple Pinkie Week will be the week before World Polio Day. Exact plans will be hammered out in the coming weeks.
Finally, we talked about plans for opening the Early Act Store. Bottom line--We need product. Students--if you have a special talent making something that you would be willing to donate to the store, please do. Pinterest has a ton of great ideas.
