Today was about getting back into the swing of things. Our efforts for the next six weeks or so will be on our Early Act Store and raising money for Kiva. We will be learning a bit about what extreme poverty means and using that knowledge to educate the rest of our classmates. We watched a video from the documentary Living on One Dollar. The guys who created the documentary organized some short clips on You Tube. We watched the first one today. | |
You can get to the other clips from the posted video if you are interested in seeing more. You can also watch the full documentary on Netflix. It's definitely worth the time.
The goal of an Early Act group is to improve the school, community, and world. There are several reasons why our world focus is on people in extreme poverty. One is because the number of people around the world in extreme poverty is SHRINKING! It's true! What we are doing is helping. ("We" as in--people of the world who are fortunate enough to be able to help.) Another reason is because so many adults don't even truly understand what extreme poverty means. We--Early Act Co-Chairs--didn't even get it until we started doing some research! 1.1 billion people in the world are living on ONE DOLLAR or less per day. That puts our country's poorest citizens in the richest 15% of the world. Kids do make a difference in this. We have seen it!

Another goal our group has this year is to spend some time with the younger students in our building. Due to our recess times, we can't meet as a whole school Early Act group, but even little kids can make a BIG DIFFERENCE. We want them to know that this is their Early Act group too! We've assigned "ambassadors" to the 2nd and 3rd grade classes. These ambassadors will be meeting with their assigned classrooms in the next week or so to introduce themselves and to tell a little bit about what Early Act is and does.
