This week is our self-declared World Poverty Awareness Week! Early Act students went into classrooms last week to teach their fellow students about extreme poverty and why we should do something about it. If you'd like to see the slideshow they shared, click here. The very next day, we had our most successful Early Act Store sales EVER selling more than $40 of student-made product. Kids at this school care so much!
Today was our second day collecting donations and we counted/rolled money at our Early Act meeting. So far we have raised (drum roll please....) $180!! These donations will go into our Kiva account and go toward funding loans for people in need. Please take a look at some of the loans we have made so far: Cherry Creek's Kiva Profile. Let us know if you would like to start your own Kiva account (or if you already have one) and would like a coupon for $25 to go towards a loan of your choice. We can hook you up with a coupon to make a loan at no cost to you. Just go to "Contact Us" above and let us know you'd like to make a loan.

Each day this week we have been focusing on a different aspect of poverty. Monday's focus was clean water. In the morning announcements, Jason shared that 750 million people (twice the U.S. population) don't have access to safe drinking water. At lunch all students watched a clip from Living on One Dollar. Check out the video at the right.
| Today's focus was hunger. Katie shared with CCE students that hunger is the #1 cause of death in the world. This seems impossible since there is enough food in the world to feed 12 billion people and only about 7 billion people on the planet. However, people in extreme poverty simply cannot afford food that gives them good nutrition. If you'd like to see the video we showed at lunch today, click to the left. :) |
Tomorrow we will focus on education. In many countries around the world, students have to pay for tuition fees and uniforms in order to go to school. Often families cannot afford this cost and also need their children to help work and earn money for the family. This makes it even harder to break the cycle of poverty. Many of the people we loan to on Kiva mention using the profits they make to send their children to school. Check out the video to the right to get a preview of what the kids will see at lunch tomorrow. :)
| Thursday's focus will be micro-financing. With half of the world's population living on less than $2.50 per person per day, there are plenty of people out there who need a boost. The great thing about micro-financing is it is a hand up and not a hand out. People in need learn how to manage their business and their finances making it easier to pull themselves and their families out of poverty. To learn more, watch the video to the left. |
We have three more days left in our World Poverty Awareness campaign. Friday we will meet with 2nd and 3rd grade at their Friday meeting and make some loans to show them where their money is going. Monday we will do the same with 4th and 5th grade to do the same! Some have asked how they can support us. Checks may be written to Cherry Creek Elementary and sent to 12675 Foreman Rd., Lowell, MI, 49331. Thank you!
