School Board Presentation
Our presentation to the Lowell School Board went great. We are so lucky to work in a district with such great people in charge! A special thank you to students Hailey McIntosh, Madison Coviak, and Abigail Milley for coming out to help us present! (Thanks to parents for carting your kids out too!)We all had a lot of fun sharing what we love with the School Board, and they had a lot of great questions for us. |
Kenya
At our all school Monday Meeting this week, Mrs. Otten introduced a group of three high school girls to our elementary students. These high school students are doing a senior capstone project where they will be coordinating a pen-pal writing project with our students and students at Wangige Primary School near Nairobi, Kenya. The object is to help the students from Kenya to learn how to read and write English. The girls brought along Mr. Heeringa--a former physical education teacher who has been to the school and is helping to oversee the project. Mr. Heeringa told us that when asked what they would like most for their school, the kids at Wangige Primary School begged for textbooks. | These kids have nothing but a couple of rocks they use as a goal and a ball made of tape that they use for a soccer ball, but the thing they want most are textbooks! You can imagine how valuable these pen-pal letter will be--both to our students here AND to the students in Kenya. |
Plastic, Plastic, Everywhere!
We had a small group of die-hard Early Act-ers today (sunshine called some of the others outside), but we made the most of it. First we made another loan to a group in Kenya in honor of our future pen-pals from Wangige Primary School in Kenya (Click here to check out this latest loan.). This makes a total of 10 loans in Kenya. We found out that most of the loans we have done are within 50 miles or so of Wangige Primary School! What a cool coincidence! We then continued our discussion from last week about how to do our part to support the school's Earth Day Recycle Challenge. We didn't get to talk much because recess ended, BUT here is some information about alternative plastic-like materials that are actually compostable! http://www.ecovativedesign.com/ | Fox 17 also did a story about a congressman from Michigan who has introduced a bill to ban the production of micro-beads found in many beauty products and finding their way into our Great Lakes. Find the article here. Change is happening! The more people jump on-board, the quicker that change will come! |
