Today was Purple Pinkie Day at Cherry Creek!! The day was meant to raise awareness about polio--a devastating disease that is ALMOST eradicated from this earth!! Early Act students spent their lunch and recess times educating their fellow students about polio and what they can do to help. At our meeting yesterday, students learned four facts about polio to educate others and raise awareness. #1-Polio is a disease that cripples people. #2-Kids under 5 are the most affected (for their whole life). #3-It takes only 60 cents to vaccinate one person. #4-Polio is ALMOST GONE!! It is 99% of the way to being completely eradicated from the world. |
If students were able to repeat one of the facts they had learned, their pinkie was painted purple. Some students were content with some washable marker, others wanted to be official and made their way to the Early Act store where an adult painted their pinkie with purple nail polish. Students all over were proud to show off their pinkies AND tell what fact they had learned to earn it. |
Mr. Lundstrom--a friend of our Early Act group from the Lowell Rotary--came out today to help spread the word about polio. He taught students the facts and painted pinkies. Rotary Clubs around the globe are working hard to raise funds in order to get vaccinations to the last few places in the world where polio is still a problem. We want to do all we can to help the cause and raising awareness in this young generation is the first step! Please go to www.endpolionow.org to learn more about how YOU can help! |
